Additional Details

This photograph was taken 16 days after the Battle of Antietam. The Army of the Potomac remained near the battlefield, as General McClellan hesitated to pursue Lee's Confederate army southward. The inaction was a source of great frustration to President Lincoln, who would relieve McClellan of his command the following month.
President Lincoln, if you haven't figured it out, is the tall fellow in the foreground wearing the stovepipe hat. General McClellan stands facing him, four figures to the left; one senses a bit of defiance in his pose. The figure at the far right of the image is Captain George Armstrong Custer. Katz, Custer in Photographs, K-8; Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs O-62.
