Civil War carte-de-visite album including John Wilkes Booth, Ulysses Grant, and Thaddeus Stevens. 23 photographs, most albumen cartes-de-visite plus one small tintype mounted on card, inserted into 12 album leaves. 12mo, original calf, moderate wear, with clasp; rear hinge split; gift inscription for the blank album on front flyleaf dated Christmas 1861. Various places, 1861-circa 1865

The better-known figures in this album include assassin John Wilkes Booth (2 portraits), Stephen Douglas, General George McClellan (2 portraits), Thaddeus Stevens (3 portraits), General Benjamin Grierson, Major General Ulysses S. Grant (an attractive lesser-known image in decorative border by H.A. Balch of Memphis), Congressman Schuyler Colfax of Indiana, and General Franz Sigel. An unidentified army camp scene shows several officers in foreground, and is inscribed on verso "Hd Qrs 22d M.V.I. Chattanooga, Tenn., to Maj. Fox with compliments of Henry S. Dean, Maj. 22d M.V.I.
