Additional Details

Lafayette V. Newell (1833-1914) was a New Hampshire photographer who during the Civil War established himself at the large Union military base in Point Lookout, Maryland at the mouth of the Potomac River. The base included a hospital and Fort Lincoln, which housed several regiments of "Colored Troops." The soldiers shown here are Reuben Lyle and Samuel B. Parrish of the 185th Pennsylvania; Joseph Harbison of the 18th Indiana; David H. Weaver of Ashland, KY; Silas Smalley of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery; Corporal Samuel Collard of the 2nd New Hampshire; and . . . Confederate General Robert E. Lee, in a photograph of an engraving of a well-known photograph. All 7 bear the Newell backmark.
With--2 other cartes-de-visites: John Rathfond of the 148th Pennsylvania, shot at Whitehurst Gallery in Baltimore; and Mrs. Emma Smalley, photographer unknown.
