Additional Details

Civil War photographer Mathew Brady went into deep debt during the war, and entered bankruptcy in 1873 after failing to obtain compensation for his work from the United States government. This official District Court document lists more than ninety of his known creditors, giving the amount of debt for most. The leading creditors were George W. Hunt of Sandown, NH, a shoemaker and farmer, at $2000 and (more explicably) New York attorney Frederick A. Lane at $1700. This copy was mailed to creditor William E. Van Wyck, a Manhattan paper dealer, who claimed $57.
