Homer produced these cards to depict the daily life of a Civil War soldier. A highlight is a jaunty caricatured self-portrait of the artist in the field titled "Our Special." Homer's contributions to Harper's Weekly were sometimes printed with the by-line "Drawn by Our Special Artist, Mr. Winslow Homer." "In the Trenches" depicts a shirtless and barefoot African-American building a fortification. A zouave roasting a small pig is titled "Extra Ration," while a soldier applauding in an opera box is titled "Home on Furlough." Other cards are titled "Good Bye," "Teamster," "The Rifle Pit," "The Girl He Left Behind Him," "Fording," "Drummer," "The Field Barber," and "Deserter." No sets of either "Life in Camp" series have been traced at auction.
