Additional Details

The main view shows a tranquil scene in the immediate wake of Lee's surrender. Union and Confederate troops engage in a calm discussion, artillery pieces are parked by a fence, and several men seem to be playing bocce with cannonballs. Among the four inset views, one shows the house where Lee and Grant held negotiations, while another shows men hacking up the surrender tree for souvenirs. Wesley Webber (1839-1914), who originally sketched these views, was an accomplished artist who was at Appomattox with the 16th Maine Infantry. Deák, Picturing America 801; no other copies traced at auction.
