A satire on Confederate president Jefferson Davis, who had allegedly been wearing his wife's shawl when captured. Here his daughters (he only had one) plead "Please let my old mother go to the spring for some water to wash in?" An amused Union soldier lifts the president's skirt to examine his large boots, while another scoffs "President!! Who is he President of?" Peters 1653.
