Additional Details

The 24th New Jersey Infantry was a nine-month regiment which served at the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. These scenes, mostly of camp life, were drawn from life during the regiment's first three months of service in 1862. Why the drawings were sent to Germany for engraving can only be guessed at. A copy was displayed at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
John G. Keyser, the artist, was a printer in Bridgeton, New Jersey who served as a private in the regiment. He was a naturalized American citizen, but in 1891, he returned to Germany to stay. See Historic Days in Cumberland County, New Jersey, 1855-1865, 119. Only one other copy of this curious print has been traced.
