Additional Details

A list of approximately 210 released Union soldiers with their parole date, their company and regiment, and their brigade and division if known. The order to release them was issued by Stonewall Jackson and approved by Robert E. Lee, who are both mentioned here, although they did not sign. The final docket note, by Confederate Brigadier General John H. Winder at headquarters, states that "these men have all been delivered here" and is dated 20 January 1863. An extended stay in a Confederate prison was something close to a death sentence, so these soldiers were very fortunate to be released. Among the prisoners listed here is Dyer D. Lum of the 121st New York Infantry, held at Libby Prison, who later became a notable anarchist activist.
