James W. Walker to cousin Mrs. William F. Christie of Hastings on Hudson, NY. "We are all anxiously looking for the promulgation of the proclamation of President Johnson, referring to prisoners of war. Very few here that have not made application for the amnesty oath, and all are very anxious to be released and get to their homes." Johnson's Island, OH, 21 May 1865.

R.S. Laurence to friend Miss E.F. Caldwell of Santa Rosa, CA. "I am sorry to say that I am still here. . . . I have like the rest here made application for the oath to be released & am expecting soon to leave. . . . Now our cause gone up, every one of our armies have surrendered." He expresses his wish to "try & make a start in the world again. I am crazy to see the children & home again." Johnson's Island, OH, 30 May 1865.
