Additional Details

Early in 1875, a chaotic election dispute led to a vacuum of power in Louisiana. Gen. Philip Sheridan, the Civil War hero, then established military rule and placed the state's Republicans in power. These letters, from the governors of Illinois and Mississippi, expressed support for Sheridan's controversial actions. John L. Beveridge of Illinois wrote "Your acts won the approval of mankind, when the apologists for White League and Ku Klux claims will be branded as accomplices." Adelbert Ames of Mississippi wrote "No one who knows the truth can fail to wish you God speed in your noble efforts to uphold our institutions and to protect the helpless." His letter is accompanied by a copy of the Mississippi senate resolution in support of Sheridan.
