Additional Details

Senator James F. Wilson was a radical Republican U.S. senator from Iowa. In response to an autograph seeker, he wrote "I do not think we would quarrel much over our opinions relative to the President . . . I think my regard for, and opinion of, him would certainly utterly disgust him if he were informed of them, and I doubt not he understands a good deal about it, though I have not seen him for two years." President Johnson and Senator Wilson would soon have a chance to get reacquainted. In two months, Wilson would serve as a prosecutor in Johnson's impeachment trial.
