Edward Nelson Steere (1840-1878) describes the Battle of Secessionville, SC, in which he had participated in that morning: "Awaiting us untill we approached within musket shot of them, all this time the artillery was giving them grape and canister from all directions. The Third R.I. was cut up at a most wonderfull rate. Still they pressed on with as much courage as ever. . . . About 4 in the afternoon we retreated in silence and in good order for we had not men enough to contend with them any longer, for they were constantly receiving reinforcements from Charleston. . . . The Rebels had the greatest advantage for they were in the thick brush and we march up to them in the open field. . . . Let the folks know that a great battle has been fought."
