Gaylord was a young minister's wife in Fitzwilliam, NH, and secretary of her town's Ladies Soldiers' Aid Society. Most letters are from United States Sanitary Commission workers on the home front in Boston, concerning supplies needed by soldiers. Most interesting are two letters from Gaylord's friend Hannah Aurelia Adams, who went south with the Sanitary Commission and wrote from St. Louis and Alabama, discussing the large number of wounded troops and the enthusiasm of the local African-Americans. Also includes two receipts for hospital supplies donated to the Sanitary Commission, and a report from the New England Women's Auxiliary Association. Interesting documentation of the important role of women in the Civil War.
