Additional Details

The author of the abolitionist classic Uncle Tom's Cabin writes on the day before the election: "I say I am and ever have been avowedly, strongly, enthusiastically for Blaine & that I abhor as a mother should the vile example set by Grover Cleveland." She undoubtedly refers to the rumor that Cleveland had fathered an illegitimate child. However, personal scandals aside, she would likely have supported the Republican Blaine and the party of Lincoln regardless.
