BRITISH OCCUPATION OF MADEIRA IN 1801 (CLINTON, WILLIAM HENRY.) Manuscript order book covering the British occupation of Madeira, in a clerical hand (presumably that of Brigade Major J. McCombe whose signature appears within the text) from Clinton's commission as the commander of the detachment on 27 June 1801, to the arrival at Madeira on 24 July to disembarking the island on 18 January 1802. The purpose of the expedition to and friendly occupation of Madeira was to protect the island from possible aggressions from Napoleon's armies. This order book includes the text of the Governor of Madeira's proclamation welcoming the British forces "for the purpose of protecting the Lives and Properties of the Inhabitants from the Common Enemy" on 2 August 1801. The book also includes appointments of field officers for the day, details on provisions, orders for work detachments, the assembly of a court martial, a commendation from Clinton after an inspection, etc.
