(CLOCK.) Dit le Passé et l'Avenir [It tells the past and the future]. Gilt bronze pendulum clock surmounted by a cherub wearing a magician's apron and performing with cups and balls on a table, holding a small wand in his right hand and a cup in his left. Two joined hearts are revealed beneath the raised cup. The scene is supported at the corners by four columns, with the front columns decorated with quivers of arrows. The clock face is set in a sunburst and the base is occupied by drapery with the motto "Dit le Passé et l'Avenir." The side of the base contains two smoking cauldrons and the side supports are in the form of winged lions. The combination of the joined hearts and the quiver of arrows identifies the cherub as Cupid and suggests his role in the magic of love. 17 1/2 inches tall; base measures 4 1/2x12 1/2 inches (44.5 cm; 11x32 cm). Manufactured by CAILLONET. Paris, early 19th century.
