Additional Details

This rare copy of Coburn's handsome pictorial study of the mills of William C. Jones Ltd. was intended for circulation to the firm's customers. The pictures, which follow a 14-page descriptive text, depict "the origin and growth of the cotton trade and the cotton-waste trade in particular." Coburn, a master of light and shadow, predominantly shows women engaged in the down-and-dirty activities of factory work. Companion images include 3 lyrical street scenes, and men pushing handtrucks or transporting huge bales of cotton on their backs.<
