This letter reads in part "We are now arived at Hudson River and has had a tedious march through the woods. We exspect to march from this place in a short time and our friends and neighbours are well at present." Samuel Garfield lived from 1720 to 1792; his gravestone in Spencer, MA reads "A soldier in two colonial wars, a patriot in the Revolution."
