This vue d'optique print depicts the 20 June 1762 French capture of St. John's, Newfoundland from the British by a naval expedition led by Chevalier de Ternay. The French destroyed the valuable Newfoundland fishing fleet, but held the city for only 3 months before being driven out in the Battle of Signal Hill.
