Additional Details

John Hill (1666-1713) was a Maine farmer and sawyer who served as an officer in King William's War. As an ensign in 1692, he was a hero of the Raid on Wells, helping a garrison of 15 repel hundreds of French and Indians, and was soon promoted to captain. In April 1693, he was ordered to build a new fort at Saco, south of what is now Portland. This account book details the supplies issued to his troops, showing the charges to each for tobacco, pipes, fall shoes, britches, stockings, and the like. See Jordan's Leighton Genealogy, pages 103-111.
