Additional Details

John Hill (1666-1713) was a Maine farmer and sawyer who served as an officer in King William's War. As an ensign in 1692, he was a hero of the Raid on Wells, helping a garrison of 15 repel hundreds of French and Indians, and was soon promoted to captain. In April 1693, he was ordered to build a new fort at Saco, south of what is now Portland. See Jordan's Leighton Genealogy, pages 103-111.
This group of Hill's papers includes: Muster roll of troops under his command. List of 53 soldiers with their home towns and enlistment dates; worn with cello tape repairs. [Fort Saco, ME?], 27 [May?] 1693 Account of oxen received from Samuel Wheelwright. Np, 28 November 1691 John Hoag. Order for 16 shillings. Np, 26 December 1694 Unsigned letter draft: "Dear Sir, Cpt. Hill has represented to me that the Berwick men that had been enlisted for Cape Breton & were discharged from that service to be employed as soldiers on their own frontier are desireous of being wholly dismissed. . ." Np, nd John Sawyer. Autograph Letter Signed to Hill, asking for a certificate of disability "for loosing ye use of my right arme by a shott when Nath'll Wells & others wear killed in ye publick service." Describes himself as "a poor criple" and "your poor distressed servant." [Ipswich, MA], [September?] 1700.
