(COLORADO.) Manuscript map of the Battle of Milk Creek. Pencil, 6 x 4 3/4 inches; vertical fold, minor soiling, apparently detached from a larger sheet. [Colorado?], circa 1879

Additional Details

The 1879 Battle of Milk Creek was one of the last large-scale battles between American Indians and the United States Army, resulting in the deaths of 13 soldiers and a larger number of Ute warriors. A group of soldiers under Major Thomas T. Thornburgh was en route to the Ute reservation to protect the resident Indian agent, but was intercepted and besieged by a larger party of Utes. Thornburgh was killed during the first hour of the conflict. This small map shows the creek, several topographical features, and an "x" denoting "Thornburgh killed here, 1879." The map is unsigned, and the creator is unknown.
