Additional Details

A rare pair of photographs depicting the early days of Coney Island. August Corbin's Manhattan Beach Hotel was opened in 1877 with the dedication given by Ulysses S. Grant. The 700-foot long hotel was considered the most elegant and fashionable hotel in the country at the time. Down the beach, West Brighton catered to the entertainment needs of the hotel's wealthy guests. Mrs. Vanderveer's Salt Water Baths was one of many bathing pavillions in the area that provided an amusing and safe alternative to the ocean.
