Additional Details

Second French edition, updated to include the 1787 Federal Consitution in addition to the thirteen state constitutions. The original translation was by the Duc de la Rochefoucault, with more than 50 footnotes by Benjamin Franklin. In 1966, this copy was a gift from François Mitterand to United States Senator Joseph S. Clark. Mitterand was at that point a former French cabinet minister who had recently lost a presidential election to Charles de Gaulle; his long term as president would not begin until 1981. Clark was a Democratic Pennsylvania senator noted for his opposition to the Vietnam War. Howes C716; Sabin 16120.
