On 21 June 1788, with its ratification by New Hampshire, the Constitution went into effect. Philadelphia responded by hastily putting together a massive 4th of July parade in honor of the new government called the Grand Federal Procession. Most of this issue is devoted to a detailed description of what remains one of the great civic celebrations in American history.
