Federalist delegates James Iredell and William R. Davie had these debates published at their own expense, which "gave a powerful impetus to the reaction which secured ratification in 1789" (Iredell's DAB entry). Early owner William Coruthers declared book theft a capital crime in his flyleaf inscription: "Steel not this book my honist freind, for fear the gallas should prove your end."
