first edition. "The first authoritative collected edition, of which two hundred copies were printed"--Evans 17390. Also includes the text of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and various treaties.

This copy was issued to the Office for Foreign Affairs, the predecessor of today's State Department. As this printing was authorized on 29 December 1780, and the Office for Foreign Affairs was established on 10 January 1781, this was likely one of the first volumes in the office library.
