Additional Details

A juvenile biography of explorer John Ledyard, the only American on Cook's final voyage, based largely on Ledyard's 1783 "Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean." Extended passages on Hawaii, as well as Ledyard's family life in Connecticut and Long Island. An amusing introduction concerning the race of Yankees asks "What people are more intelligent, more brave, more virtuous than the Yankees?" Only one other copy has been traced on the market over the past hundred years, the Eberstadt-Streeter copy which was sold by Swann in 2000. "A woodcut vignette . . . is an imaginary view of Ledyard in the forest attempting to ascend Muana Loa"--Forbes Hawaii 801. Howes L180; Streeter sale 3518.
