Additional Details

Both twin-screw ships were built at the Monfalcone yards of Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico. Both sailed under the Cosulich flag and later under the Italia flag. "Saturnia" began her maiden voyage in September 1927. She was seized by the United States during World War II and converted to a hospital ship with the name "Francis Y. Slanger." She resumed Italian service after the war. "Vulcania" began her maiden voyage in December 1928. She was also seized by the United States and served as an American troopship during the war. She was also returned to Italian service after the war.
