Gathering of 40 carte-de-visite-format mug shots from various Police Departments in the U.S., with images of crooks who were busted for a variety of crimes, including "working the crowd at the Inauguration of Pres. Cleveland." Albumen (33) and silver (4) prints, 4 with a debossed numeric hand stamp on print recto and a few with numeric notations, in ink, on mount recto, and with the printed Bertillon system of identification mount verso; an addional 3 are reproductions; many with trimmed mounts. 1877-1904

Additional Details

The debossed numbers that appear on print recto indicate that these mug shots relate to Thomas Byrnes' famous book, Professional Criminals of America (1886), in which 204 portraits were reproduced.
