Additional Details

Tiburcio Vásquez (1835-1875) spent his entire life in California, with much of it devoted to cattle-rustling and armed robberies. He started to gain national fame in 1873, when his gang killed three bystanders in a store, and was captured in May of the following year. He presented himself as a champion of Mexican-American rights in the increasingly Anglo-American world of California. During his final months in prison, he sold photographs to his visitors from his window, until he went to the gallows on 17 March 1875.
