(CRIME.) The Apprehension & Committal . . . of Black Murphy . . . The Child Stealer! With full Particulars of The Black Man's Horrible Den. Letterpress broadside, 143/4x93/4 inches; several short closed marginal tears. London: G. Smeeton, [1833]

Additional Details

A broadside printing that outlines in great detail the use and abuse of street urchins and runaways by Henry Murphy, a black man. Murphy, who was apprehended in 1833, might well have served as the model for Dickens' "Fagin" in Oliver Twist. For the sake of propriety and as a staunch abolitionist, Dickens made his Fagin white.
