Additional Details

The account of an unusual case of murder committed aboard the ship Hind. Apparently, the black man had been quarelling with the ship's carpenter, a white man, and had asked the captain's permission to seek "satisfaction," a euphemism for a duel. The captain said he would think it over, but in the meantime the argument heated up, and William, the black man got his satisfaction, in front of the captain and his wife, stabbing the carpenter in the chest.
