(CRIME.) The West Auburn Murder Case. Two cartes-de-visite of Luther S. Verrill and Clifton Haries ( sic), a white man and a black man, accused of murder. Maine, 1867

Additional Details

Luther Verrill and Clifton Harris were accused of murdering Susanah Kinsley and Polly Caswell, two elderly ladies. The caption under Verrill's photograph reads "The Supposed West Auburn Murderer," while the caption under Harris's photograph is definite: "The West Auburn Murderer." This would indicate these photographs were taken before the trial. At the trial Verrill was exonerated. Harris was found guilty and hanged. The execution caused quite a stir in the normally pacific state of Maine.
