The famous Mary Rogers case was used by Edgar Allen Poe as the basis for his Mystery of Marie Roget. This sensationalistic account, presented as the killer's own narrative, describes the murder of a cigar girl in New York and the cross-country crime spree that followed. Includes Wallace's boast of vandalizing Joseph Smith's Mormon temple at Nauvoo, adding that "We were very much tempted to murder him for the sole benefit of mankind" (page 21).
