Additional Details

A volume from the heyday of the National Police Gazette, which covered horrific crimes, theater gossip, sporting news, Wild West stories, and general pulchritude with copious illustrations and more than a little taste of sleaze. It might be compared to a Harper's Weekly for the irregular churchgoer. This volume includes 37 complete issues of the National Police Gazette, interspersed with 19 issues of the very similar Illustrated Police News, and a single issue of another imitator, the New York Illustrated Times. More than half of the issues date from 1884. The 8 November 1884 issue of the Illustrated Police News includes a short report on the victory of Providence over New York in the first post-season baseball championship series. Collation available.
