(CRIME--YOUNG OFFENDERS)
Group of approximately 160 mug shots of juvenile delinquents and young criminals from Pennsylvania and the Pacific Northwest. The kids, including girls and African Americans, were arraigned on various charges, including drag racing and running numbers, auto theft, shoplifting robbery, gambling on highway, counterfeiting, and the inevitably heinous--assault with a deadly weapon and murder. Silver prints, sizes ranging from 3 1/2x2 1/2 inches (8.9x6.4 cm.) to double images measuring 3x4 3/4 inches (7.6x12.1 cm.), many mounted to index or Bertillon cards with handwritten or typewritten information and dates. 1900-65

Additional Details

A group of sobering images in which young offenders, most of them from the ages of 12 to 20, gaze at the camera with range of expressions: innocent, carefree, nerdy, surprised, angry, disgusted, or diabolical. Most of the arrestees were picked up in Philadelphia or New Castle, Pennsylvania, from 1930-60. The earliest 40 images depict criminals in the Pacific Northwest; most are single prints stapled to index cards.
