first edition. Saco (1797-1879), edited the "Revista Bimestre Cubana" until 1834, when he was forced to leave the island because of his anti-slavery principles. In 1836 he was elected to represent the eastern part of Cuba in the Spanish cortes, or parliament, but never took his seat. Slavery was not abolished on the island until 1886.
