(CUBA--MEDICINE.) Terriles, Andrés. An unpublished essay on the spread of yellow fever in Cuba. [19] manuscript pages plus cover sheet. Folio, disbound; browned but sturdy and legible. [Havana, circa 1814]

Additional Details

A response to a series of 11 questions about yellow fever (or 'vomito negro') which had been asked by officials in Havana. It can be dated because another doctor named Marcos Sánchez Rubio published his own answers to the same set of questions in 1814 as 'Tratado sobre la fiebre biliosa y otras enfermedades.' The author notes (perhaps not controversially) that the disease seems to spread more rapidly under conditions of high heat, humidity, and population density, and that newcomers from Europe are particularly susceptible. Though no cure is known, opium is recommended to alleviate symptoms (page 15).
