The "Lusitania" is probably the best known of the Cunarders, with her sad history greatly contributing to her fame. The quadruple-screw vessel began trans-Atlantic service in 1907 and recaptured the blue riband for the British. In May 1915 she was torpedoed by a German submarine, sinking in 18 minutes with a loss of life totaling 1198 persons. This tragic event galvanized the British and American nations against Germany.
