In 1889, Edward R. Harriman of New York organized a scientific expedition, at his own expense, to study the coast of Alaska. Among the party members were such prominent naturalists as John Burroughs and John Muir, in addition to artists R. Swain Gifford, Fred S. Dellenbaugh, and Louis Agassiz Fuertes. One of 2 staff photographers was Edward S. Curtis.
