This photograph of Custer was taken just a few weeks prior to his wedding to Elizabeth "Libbie" Bacon, which could explain the young General's cropped hair and the sparkle in his eye. At the time William F. Browne was the camp photographer for the 5th Michigan Cavalry. He would soon find himself in the employ of Alexander Gardner. See
