Additional Details

In 1864, Custer married the only daughter of a Michigan probate judge, Daniel S. Bacon (1798-1866). These four letters demonstrate Bacon's appreciation of his ambitious young son-in-law, telling Custer: "I wish you had all letters & articles touching your military life. It would make a volume & would be pleasant for us to refer to" (6 November) and "It would indeed be strange if you do not obtain the full appointment of Brig. Genl. in the regular army" (15 November). Bacon also passes on news of Custer's brothers, writing "I have had a talk with Bost [Boston Custer], think I inspired him with an ambition which will be of service to him" (3 November) and "You may well feel proud of Tom, I feel so myself as a Monroe boy" (31 July).
