Custer, 13 November 1866; an ALS from Keogh to brother Thomas Keogh, 12 March 1870; a disability certificate issued to Keogh in 1869; a letter to Keogh from family member Anthony Keogh; a letter from Keogh's sister describing Little Bighorn battlefield and Keogh's grave, 1881; and 3 letters to and from Keogh's brother Thomas, 1876-1882. Keogh (1840-1876) was an Irish-born Civil War veteran who served as a captain in Custer's 7th U.S. Cavalry after the war. His horse, Comanche, is often called the only federal survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. In the 1870 letter, Keogh thanks his brother for some sheet music: "The band already play it, they played it at a masked ball the last night but one ago at Mrs. Custer's & every one was enchanted with it." Includes a long letter from Keogh's friend C.E. Martin to brother Thomas Keogh in Ireland, 9 July 1876, informing him of the Little Bighorn disaster. She quotes Keogh's final letter to the Martin family, explaining his burial wishes should he fall in battle.
