Additional Details

Depicts two contrasting scenes. On the left is a desperate unit of U.S. soldiers on an open plain, surrounded by attacking Indians on horses. The scene was likely inspired by news of Custer's last stand at the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. On the right is a different group of officers at a society reception in Washington, far removed from the battlefield. This drawing was apparently done in the late 19th century, although the artist and the date are unknown. It was exhibited at the 1968 "Custer's Last" exhibit at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX, as the property of Lewis Ferbrache.
