Additional Details

An exceptionally scarce Italian map of Cyprus present here in a fine example with very wide original margins. The map is generally unattributed, although in one 19th century catalog it was ascribed to Gastaldi and a pencil note on this example proposes Camocio. The map served as a prototype for Duchetti's similarly-titled production of 1570. It is possible that Duchetti reengraved his map in response to the outbreak of war with the Ottomans. This map was also copied by Nelli, who reduced it and added Venetian ships in the waters around the island. That map was also published in 1570. A very nice copy of the Nelli map can also be found in this sale, lot 44. Stylianou 36, figure 39; Tooley, Italian Atlases, 181.
