Additional Details

In 1926, Russell Markert (1899-1990) founded a St. Louis dance company called the Missouri Rockets, which he soon moved to New York and renamed the Roxyettes. As the Rockettes, they became a New York cultural institution. These scrapbooks include press notices dating back almost to the group's founding, most relating to the Roxyettes but a few relating to Markert's other activities. The first two volumes were apparently compiled by Markert or his staff, while at least part of the third volume was done with the aid of a clippings service. A large photograph of Markert is mounted at the beginning of the first volume. The third volume also includes 8 photographs of the group, a sheet music cover, and 6 mimeograph sheets of audience responses to performances at the Roxy Theatre.
