(DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.) Ames, D.T.; artist. A stunning illustrated rendering of the Declaration. Pen and ink, 37 3/4 x 28 3/4 inches; minor soiling and dampstaining. (TFC) Syracuse, NY, [1866]

Additional Details

At center is the text of the Declaration, surrounding a hand-drawn portrait of Washington. Above and below are partial renderings of the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation, and to the sides are smaller portraits of 14 leaders of the Revolution: Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin, Hancock, Generals Greene and Lafayette, and more.
Ames created this in 1866 as a promotional tool for Ames' National Business College in Syracuse. It was photographed and offered in carte-de-visite form, with an advertisement for the college on verso. Offered here is what appears to be the original art for those cartes-de-visite. Provenance: Hamilton sale, 5 March 1981, lot 84.
