(DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.) From the Office of the National Advocate.--July 4, 1817. Declaration of Independence. Letterpress broadside, 22 3/4 x 18 inches; dampstaining, separation and wear at folds. [New York: Napthali Phillips], 1817

Additional Details

This printing of the Declaration does not have the graphic appeal of the Binns, Tyler, and Stone facsimiles which followed soon after it. However, it bears the distinction of appearing first in Bidwell's catalogue, "American History in Image and Text." It features the text set in two columns, the signatures following it in type and arranged by state, and a small American eagle woodcut in the title area. Bidwell traced just one copy, at the American Antiquarian Society, and we are aware of no other copies at auction.
